Poem -Job Chapter 11

When Words Wound a Broken Heart
A Poem on Job Chapter 11
For GeorgesPoem.com

Upon the ashes Job sat low,
His heart weighed down by grief and woe;
His children gone, his body sore,
He wondered what lay still in store.

Then Zophar spoke with stern reply,
While sorrow filled his neighbour’s eye;
He judged the words that grief had stirred,
But missed the anguish in each word.

“You should repent,” his friend declared,
As though he knew why Job was spared;
He claimed that Job deserved yet more,
And wounded where the heart was sore.

He spoke of wisdom vast and high,
Beyond the earth, beyond the sky;
Yet failed to see how little he
Could know of God’s great mystery.

For pain does not reveal a crime,
Nor guilt explain each troubled time;
A faithful soul may weep and pray,
While darkness clouds the coming day.

Though Zophar promised morning light,
Repentance would not set all right;
His harsh advice could not explain
The reason for his neighbour’s pain.

How quick we are to judge and speak,
When we should comfort those grown weak;
A gentle word, a listening ear,
Can help a burdened soul draw near.

Before you claim to know the cause,
Let love persuade your tongue to pause;
You cannot see the whole of grief,
But you can offer some relief.

Sit close beside the one who cries,
Without a speech of hows and whys;
And when no answer comes to mind,
There still is strength in being kind.

God’s wisdom reaches past our sight,
His mercy holds us through the night;
Though questions linger, sharp and deep,
He hears the prayers of those who weep.

Lord, guard the words we choose to say,
And teach us kindness every day;
Let humble hearts and love impart
Your comfort to a broken heart.
